Cole Sherwood's Javelina

All of my boys and I drew Javelina tags for one of our favorite units. Since the boys last hunt Cole has been asking if he could shoot first since he didnt get to shoot a deer. So on opening day we all went to a spot that has produced pigs before. My second son Zane decided he would ditch us for a scout campout and Sydney gladly took his place. Along with Tony Stanley to glass we set up and glassed all day and moved to new spots and tried to turn up some pigs. It wasnt unil right before dark Tony found a pig. We decided to leave him and come back in the morning. After only glassing for 10 minutes I found a herd of 4 pigs. With all the kids following we made our way down to 270 yds and set up. Cole made a great shot on his first big game animal. Thanks to Greg Koons for coming around on the ranger to pick us up. It made to pack out super easy. Thanks again Tony for the help.

Sherwood Boys Jr. Deer Hunt

I had the opportunity to take my three boys hunting this past weekend. For two of them it was their first hunt. We set a wall tent and some other things for a comfortable camp. We had some great weather and some great food thanks to my mom and my wife for hooking us up. On this hunt we could hunt coues or mule deer. For the first day we hunted for coues deer but didn't have much luck.On the second day we had some info on a big buck from one of my friends Eric Frost who was up quail hunting. My two youngest and I found the big buck but we could never close the gap to get them a shot.

My good friend Bobby Ginos came up On Friday night and hunted with us Saturday and Sunday. Bobby had found a couple bucks on Saturday night so we went back in to try and find them. We couldn't find his two bucks but we found a couple of others that would do just fine for this jr. hunt. All three of my boys made the stalk over to try and relocate the buck. It is a challenge when you have small kids and cactus and all the other things that get thrown in to the hunt. We got to within 150 yds of the velvet buck and Zane set up and took the shot. unfortunately he missed. The buck took off running and I told Brock to get ready as soon as the buck stopped to take him. Brock made a great shot on the buck at 270 yds under pressure. I had a blast hunting with my boys. I hope to do it many more time as they grow up.

Rick hired High Desert Outfitters in 2011 to assist him on his Az Antelope hunt. Rick is on a quest to take a Antelope in every state that offers a Antelope tag to a non-resident. He has taken 14 plus one in Alberta. Greg and I spent 15 days scouting for Ricks hunt. We passed on several goats the first couple of days of the hunt. We even passed on this buck but Rick decide this was the buck he wanted to take back to Oklahoma.We relocated this buck and Rick made a great shot at 220 yds. We had a great time hunting with Rick and his wife Lynette. Thanks to Richard Fite, Chuck Hill and Tony Stanley for coming and helping glass and cook on the hunt.

Rick Wood / Mexico Coues

High Desert Outfitters donated a hunt to the California Deer Association in 2006. Rick Wood bought this hunt at auction and came hunting with us on our Mexico ranch. We teamed him up with guide Mike Hancock and they hit it off from the start. They hunted hard for 5 days and finally decided this was the buck for them.Rick's buck scored 105. I took my three boys and went scouting for Antelope this past weekend. Here are the first pictures and video I was able to capture with my new tines up adapter. It is really warm right now in AZ and makes it hard to get good pictures before the heat waves affect the quality.

Jason's Dall Sheep Hunt Day 10

I took this picture of my ram with some of the country we hiked around in to show off how far we climbed and hiked. We hiked to the top of the mountain to the left of the rams head.

This was my ride back to base camp. I think I was more excited to get back to camp and get a shower after being out in the bush for 10 days.

One of the guides Carson had a tag for sheep. So after the hunt was done he tried filling his tag. He found a ram from camp and he and another guide made a stalk on this ram. I took these photos from our base camp through my spotting scope and around 1500yds. This ram was well within bow range.

Jason's Dall Sheep Hunt Day 8-9

The weather finally broke on day 8 and we were able to get out and start hunting for sheep again. I'm not going to lie, I was a little nervous about not finding a ram. But I knew we had to keep at it. We hunted all day and didn't see a single sheep.

On our way back to camp it was just about dark and I glassed up to where we had seen the rams from the first day and found the rams. I made the decision that it was getting late in the hunt and I hadn't seen another legal sheep. The only thing holding me back from taking the ram from the first day was the broken horn. I thought what the heck if I really want to I could have the taxidermist fix it. On day 9 we woke up early to try and get in on the rams. The plan worked perfect. they had only moved about 350 yds. We came up over a little rise and I was able to lie down with a good rest and take the ram.

Jason's Dall Sheep Hunt Days 5-6-7

For the next couple of days it rained and snowed and had us fogged in. The visibillity was so bad we couldn't glass for sheep very well.

We hiked up to the dead ram and brought the head back. I now had a dall sheep pick up head. This was our camp for the ten day hunt.

I took this picture of a small wolf that was near the dead ram.

We glassed up seven grizzly bears. It was really neat to watch these bears. But my guide Bill told me to always have shell in the gun when we had bears in our site.

We continued to hunt for sheep and caribou even though the weather was bad. This was our clothes dryer

My plan was to take my ram first then hunt for a caribou. But when the weather turned bad it pushed the caribou down from the mountains.

Jason's Dall Sheep Hunt Days 2-3-4

For the next several days my guide Bill and I would hike and glass for sheep and caribou. We would spot some rams and move in to check them out. But we still couldn't find anything better that the ram from the first day. The country was amazing to be in.

Jason's Dall Sheep Hunt Day 1

On the first legal day hunting my guide and I were able to glass up these three rams and make a stalk on them. As we made our way up the mountain we knew these rams were going to be close. We had just topped out and there they were just 40yds away.

The rams spooked and ran out to 250yds. This gave us some time to look them over and decide if any of them were legal. I snapped these photo's through my spotting scope. My guide Bill said the middle ram was legal if I wanted to take him. The ram had four inches broken on his right side and I wasn't sure I wanted to end my hunt that soon.

Back at camp as we were getting ready to eat I was glassing as Bill was cooking dinner. I glassed up the mountain just behind our camp and glassed up this dead ram that had died the day before. Bill wasn't real sure what may have killed the ram. Maybe a wolf or he might have fallen off a cliff ledge. You could see a wolverine eating on the ram. We decide to hike up there and check the ram out the next day.

Dall Sheep Hunt in NWT

In 2007 I headed to the North West Territories to hunt dall sheep with Greg, his wife Laurie and another good friend Mike Hancock. They flew us in and dropped us off in our spike camps that would be our home for the next 10 days. With in the first ten minutes I had this single Caribou come by. To be legal you cant fly and hunt in the same 12 hours.

Here are a few of the other Caribou I got some photos of while on my hunt. As the weather got colder the Caribou would move down from the mountains and move through this bench that my guide and I were camped on.

Tom Haney's Double in Mexico

Tom Haney has hunted our Mexico ranch 5-6 times. A couple of years ago he decided he would buy two tags and hunt for two weeks. On the first hunt he hunted with me and this is the buck we ended up taking. We had been on a bigger buck early on in the hunt but due to day light fading and the buck not getting up Tom decided not to take the shot and maybe wound or blow the buck out of the country. We glassed this buck up close to 3/4 of mile away and made a play on him. Tom shot this buck with a 300 weatherby mag. These pictures don't really do this buck justice. He scored 102.

Its hard to beat the sunrise's and sunset's in Mexico

Lupita a little girl that lived on the ranch for awhile. My wife bought her a stroller and a baby for me to bring down to her.

Some other kids that came to visit. They love to see us bring a deer into camp. I think they like the treats we give them better.

Gail Sherwood's Mexico Buck 2011

Here is the buck my Uncle Gail took with me on my ranch in old Mexico. This is the 3rd time Gail has been on the ranch. The first year he was there he and I hunted together and found a buck that was one of the biggest bucks I have ever seen. I thought the buck would score in the high 120's. We didn't connect on the giant buck and I know the buck still haunts me. On this trip Gail and his son David only had a couple of days to hunt due to prior commitments back in the valley. Gail and I got to a glassing point early and were on bucks before the sun was even up. We were after a buck that was around 100" but when this buck chased a doe right to us we decided to go ahead and take advantage. Gail made two great shots on this buck with his 300 RUM at over 350 yds.

Peter Mock took this outstanding rocky mountain bighorn with HDO in 2009. This ram came from the Bear Canyon Wilderness he was a transplant form Wheeler Peek New Mexico. This is the biggest ram to be harvested from the unit.Peter shot this ram at 125 yds and scored 182.Thanks to Dan Koons and Chuck Hill for all their great help on all the sheep hunts.

In 2008 I purchased a land owner tag for my son Brock to hunt Antelope. He had just started playing pop warner football, and at practice one night I got the call that he had broken his arm. I didn't know what we were going to do. We only had about 5 weeks till the hunt and we knew he wasn't going to be able to have his cast off for the hunt. We spent alot of time at the range working on his shooting. The season is only two days long so we knew we had our work cut out for us. We stalked a couple of Antelope on the first day but couldn't close the deal. We had see this buck just off the ranch boundaries the first day and new he was the best buck. As luck would have it the buck moved onto the ranch the second day. Brock and I spent the whole second day stalking this buck. The closest we got was 600yds. The buck took his 12 does and high tail it out of there. Brock and I took off after the buck going through the open. The buck saw us and came running back towards us. I had Brock drop down and get ready. The buck came to 40yds to try and figure out what we were. Brock shot his buck with a 22-250.

Jerry took this great looking coues deer with HDO on our ranch in Mexico. This buck has split G2's like the 128" buck that R.H. Bryant took with us. We've seen this gene on a few other bucks on the ranch. Jerry's buck scored 108 with over 6 inches broken off the main beam.

Kevin Keime took this buck on our ranch in Old Mexico. The first few days of the hunt was cold and windy. We moved to area that was protected from the wind and found this buck rutting a doe. A couple of years ago Greg's daughter Charmaine drew a cow permit. We decide we would run up to her area and find her a good cow to shoot and then go scout for sheep in another unit after. We got started early the first morning but couldn't find any elk for the first few hours. Greg decide to head to another spot and go for a little hike. It wasn't long and we were in to the elk. Charmaine made a great shot with her 7mm 08. We hustled and took care of her elk then headed back to Phoenix then on to our unit for sheep. It made for a fun weekend. Congratulations Charmaine.

Mike Smith Hired HDO in 2010 the assit him on his desert sheep hunt. Greg, Chuck Hill and Mike were hunting out of a spike camp we call the West camp. They had seen this ram on the second day of hunting but contiuned to look for more rams and keep tabs on this one. They slipped back in on third day and took this ram at 200yds. That made to rams over 170 for HDO in 2010.

Buck Leavitt hired HDO to guide him on his once in a lifetime desert sheep hunt. Buck and I had the privilege to hunt together the year before on his father's sheep hunt. We joked around about wait till next year when you draw the tag. I couldn't hardly believe it when Buck called and said were going sheep huntin. A few weeks before the season we rode mules in and dropped our spike camp off and did some scouting. We were back a few days before the season to get prepared to be dropped off in spike camp. We rode in the day before and scouted. We only found a ewe and lamb before dark. The first day of the hunt we hiked far and glassed hard trying to find a old ram worthy of this tag. As day one ended and we headed back to camp we had only seen one ram and the ewe and lamb again. On day two we hiked even further and glassed just as hard. The last couple of hours before dark we were looking at 9 different rams.I had just swung my glasses from one ram to another when I caught movement on the hill in front of us. There were two more rams and I told Buck we had better shoot the second ram. A couple of quick shot's and the ram was down.

I shot this lion on a ranch we lease in Mexico. I had been watching the buck in the pictures for a couple of days. On the 3rd day he went missing. I noticed a doe acting really strange in the same area the buck had been. I had a hunch that maybe a lion had got him. We continued to glassed for a few more hours when I found four lions coming through a saddle. they made their way down to where the doe was acting strange. Went I set my spotting scope up yo could see the lions eating on the buck. As soon as the first lion gave a clear shot I took it. It ended up being a 457yd shot. We packed the lion out whole and gave it to the rancher.

Greg and I were able to goto Reno Nevada this year to the Wild Sheep Foundation convention. It was fun to get away for a few days and see all the mounts and talk to a few friends and outfitters. I have my desert and my dall sheep and would love to do a stone hunt. This one in the pictures would work ok for me. Actually I'm thinking of having my dall sheep mounted like this. Sorry for the quality of the photos, I took them with my phone.

R.H Bryant took this once in a lifetime coues deer with us on our ranch in old Mexico. R.H. and I had been on a buck the day before that I told him was the biggest buck I had ever seen in Mexico. I thought the buck was in the mid 120's. The next morning we were back in the same spot we had been the day before. As luck would have it we found the buck but he was chasing a doe and had gone over a couple of ridges. Right then Greg call and told us that him and his hunter had found a buck and it was the biggest buck he had ever seen we couldn't believe it. To giant bucks in the same day.We high tailed it back to the truck and met up with Greg, we hiked in and found the buck still bedded. We sat on the buck till he got up. R.H. took his great buck with a 7mm STW. His buck scored 128"

Grady Dawe / 16B

Grady Dawe took this ram on the first day of his sheep hunt in 2006. Grady his wife Sarah and I glassed this ram up at first light. We had to wait for the ram and a ewe to make their way down a ridge and out of sight before we could move on them. Grady decide this was the ram for him and we stalked in on the ram and Grady shot the ram at around 200 yds. Thanks to Mike Hancock and Richard Owens for helpimg out.

Here is my personal ram from the Cabeza Prieta Mtns. I drew this tag in 2001 with only 3 points. Greg and I hunted for 13 days before taking this very old ram. Greg and I rode horses close to a 100 miles and walked probaly close to 25. Greg made a great spot on this ram. The ram was coming off a small rock out cropping and headed to the desert floor. We sat on this ram waiting for him to get up for nearly 2 hours. When he finally did he walked straight to us. I ended up shooting this ram at 75 yds. This hunt got me hooked on hunting rams. Thanks Greg. The ram gross scored 170 4/8.

Gary Christensen's Unit 22 Ram

In 2006 Gary Christensen hired High Desert Outfitters to help him with his desert sheep hunt. Gary had been putting in for sheep for 30 plus years. He took this awesome ram on the third day of his hunt. His ram scored 173. Most days you can find Gary at the rifle range shooting and having fun. Congratulations Gary. In 2006 I finally drew a Arizona elk tag in one of the best units in the state. Greg and I had both drawn tags so we would be hunting somewhat together. Our good friends Dave Martin and Eric Frost joined us on the first 10 days of this hunt. Eric and I would chase bugles in the morings and a few evenings I sat water. This particular year the elk were really scattered and we had a hard time finding a great bull. On the 12th day of the hunt I was sitting a drinker when this bull came in to water. I had never shot an elk with my bow before so I decide with just a couple of days left I would take him. It was a great hunt with friends and its always fun to be in the woods hearing the elk.

Sterling Leavitt hired High Desert Outfitters in 2009 to help him with his desert sheep hunt. Greg and I have been wanting to do a spike camp hunt in this unit for a few years now. Usually we set a base camp and hunt out of it.This year we spiked camped in around 11 miles. Access in this unit is very limited. Be aware of the logistic's of this hunt when applying. This hunt is either done by lots of walking or by mules/horse's. High Desert Outfitters has done around 10-11 hunts in this unit. Sterling made a great up hill shot on this ram at 400yds.

Friends Eric and Wyatt Frost joined Brock and I on a Jr's Javelina hunt. We had wind and rain to deal with on the first morning of their hunt. The boys had fun building fires and just horsing around while Eric and I glassed for pigs. After Lunch we found a group of Pigs coming out of a wash and heading up the other side. Both boys made great shots on the Javelina's at over 300yds to take their first.

Here is a buck I took with a Knight 50 caliber muzzle loader. I found this buck at day light and stalked in on him three different times only to have something go wrong on each stalk. With only a hour of day light left I snuck in as close as i could and took this buck at 248yds. My good friend Jerry VanCleve was with me and help me take this really cool buck. Jerry and I shot our muzzle loaders all summer out to 200 yds to be ready for this hunt.

Mike Hancock's Lion

My good friend Mike Hancock called me and asked if I would go scouting for a up coming deer hunt that his two boys had. We had gone to one area to scout in the morning and were on our way to another. We were driving on an old dirt road and you could see some drag marks in the road, like somebody or something had drug a animal across it. We decide to get out and follow it. We had gone a couple of hunded yds when we found a dead doe that the lion had killed. We set up on this kill for two days and finally glassed this lion up. Mike shot this lion at 300 yds with a 300RUM.

Blake Sherwood's Big 2x2

A few years ago my dad came down to the ranch to hunt.We hunted for a couple of days for a giant buck we had found on the first day. Late on the fourth day I found this big 2x2. I told my dad its to bad he didnt have a third he would be over a 100". He wanted to shoot him right then. I told him we could find something better. On the way back to the ranch house my dad told me he wanted to go back tomorrow and find the buck. The next morning we found the big 2x2 tending some does not a 100yds from where he was the day before. My dad made a great down hill shot on the buck. This was his first coues and the first buck he had shot in over 20 years. The buck ended up scoring 89" as a two point. Thanks to Martin my right hand man.

Jason / Az Coues

I took this massive coues in Arizona with a very good friend and a great coues deer hunter Jerry Van Cleve. We had been glassing for awhile when Jerry said you got 5 more minutes to find a buck then were moving to another area. No sooner than those words came out of his mouth and I glassed this buck up. Jerry stayed backed and helped me get in on this buck. I ended up shooting this buck around 350yds with a 300 RUM.

Gary Willis/15BW

Gary Willis and Greg took this very long horned ram that scored 173 6/8. It was the largest ram killed in the unit that year and in the top five ever to come out of 15BW.

Laurie Koons / Muzzle loader Bull

Sarah Dawe's Ram Alive

In 2005 Greg and I were guiding a sheep hunter in 46A. We had found a good ram and had made a stalk in on the ram. I was able to take some pictures of the ram bedded. Unfortunately we weren't able close the deal. I had guided Sarah's husband Grady to a ram in 2006. Fast forward to 2007 and we were set to guide Sarah on her hunt until Greg broke his leg in the North West Territories on our dall sheep hunt. We met with Grady and Sarah and told them we weren't going to be able to guided Sarah but gave them some valuable information to hopefully help them take this ram. Mike Delgado / Mexico

A couple of years ago my good friend and attorney Mike Delgado came down to our ranch to hunt coues with us. There was only problem Mike had a day and half to hunt. He had to be back in Phoenix for a trial. So we set out to try and find the best buck we could in the time that we had. On the first morning we passed some smaller bucks. That evening we found this buck right before dark. Mike made a great shot on the bedded buck.

Ramye Stanley / Turkey

16 year old Ramye Stanley took this turkey with her brother Tony.

Tony was in Mexico this year with Greg and I. He helped me take a coues deer down there. She shot this bird at 45 yds with a 12 guage shooting 3 1/2 mags. Awesome job for her first turkey. Congratulations Ramye.

Don Boles 12AW

In 2006 I guided a hunter for Marvin James another outfitter and friend. Marvin runs a great camp. I had guided for Marvin the year before and had found a couple areas that would always have does in it. The plan was simple, keep watching the does and sooner or later a big buck would show up. Brad Richardson took this desert bighon with High Desert Outfitters from the Mohawk Mtns a couple of years ago. Greg and I made a scouting trip into the area a couple of weeks before the hunt and found this ram and a couple of smaller rams right at daylight. We decide to try and get a little closer and try to get the rams on video. It worked out great. We ended up getting over a hour of video. We were able to relocate the ram when the hunt started and Brad was able to take this great ram.

Brock's Early Rifle Elk

A couple of years ago my son Brock drew a early rifle elk tag. We hunted hard for 5-6 days for a giant bull. We just couldnt make it work out. On the next to the last day we decide to take this bull. Brock did an awesome job keeping up with us while we were running down bulls. All of this with a broken arm. Thanks to Mike Hancock from Burnt Timber Outfitters for helping out and hunting with us.

The Koons Ram

1n 1982 Greg was out predator hunting after taking a coyote and a fox he was heading back to the truck when he came across this giant desert ram pickup head. With a score of 201 3/8 is the biggest desert ram in the United States and second largest in Boone and Crockett. Also here is a live picture of the ram a few years before Greg found the head. What a monster ram.

Andy's Second B/C Coues Buck

Andy Wood has got to be one of the luckiest guys I know. He took two Boone and Crocket Coues bucks only 11 months apart. And to make this story even better we were sitting in the exact same spot when we took his 114" buck. His second buck is 119" coues hunters dream. Andy made a great shot at 415 yds. Grand Slam Rocky

In 2003 Greg was the lucky winner of the New Mexico FNAWS raffle tag. His wife Laurie had bought him $200 worth of tickets for fathers day. After making a couple of scouting trips over to New Mexico Greg new exactly where he wanted to be opening morning. Just a few hours into opening day Greg had just taken his grand slam ram and the new state record rocky mountain sheep with a score of 195 2/8. He also won the gold metal award that year at FNAWS.

Shered Sherwood's /12AW Mule Deer

In 2007 My two brothers and father drew the late 12 AW tag. I was able to go up and help them for a few days before heading to a sheep hunt. After glassing from one of my spots I found this buck tending some doe's. We made the decision to make a run on him. We made it to our shooting spot with just a few minutes of light to spare. Shered made two quick shots. We decide to back out and come back in the morning. We found the buck had gone 400 yds on pure adrenaline.

Base Camp

Here is one of our base camps at a recent sheep hunt. 16'x20' wall tents for our kitchen and 10'x12' for our sleeping tents. Cots and therma rest are provide along with propane heaters on those cold nights and mornings. Very comfortable camps. Along with Chucks cooking. You might not want to go back home

John Colbert / 46B Ram

In 2007 we hunted Desert Bighorn Sheep with John Culbert in 46B. For anyone who doesn't know about this unit we consider it to be one of the most difficult to hunt. This unit is a wilderness with very few roads. We usually pack in with mules 10-12 miles then hunt from a spike camp. Thanks to Chuck Hill and Danny Koons for helping out.

Brock's Buck

My oldest son Brock was able to take his first coues deer. We had spotted a group of bucks at first light that had a buck that I thought would break a 100". They were a little to far for a shot so we decide we would let them bed and try to get closer. We returned that afternoon and got set up in our glassing spot. The only buck that showed himself was this nice little 85'' buck. Brock made a great shot at 400 yds with a 300WSM to take his first coues deer.
